World Fitness Project VS CrossFit Games
The competitive fitness landscape is undergoing a significant transformation with the emergence of the World Fitness Project (WFP), a new league poised to challenge the established CrossFit Games. In a recent episode of Los Otros de 77, powered by Go Primal, Adri (founder of Go Primal) and Edu (founder of 77Feet) discussed this development in depth. Here's a comprehensive overview of their discussion.
The World Fitness Project: An Overview
The World Fitness Project is a newly established fitness league spearheaded by elite athlete Will Moorad. The league aims to offer an alternative competitive platform that emphasizes athlete welfare, transparency, and innovation in event structure.
Ownership and Funding:
The WFP is financially backed by the Gillette family, with Beth Gillette serving as the registered agent for World Fitness Project, LLC. Beth is a Masters CrossFit Games athlete and the CEO of PowerGrid Services. Her involvement, along with her family's support, provides the WFP with substantial financial resources to establish and grow the league.
Announced Events:
The inaugural 2025 season of the WFP will feature a series of competitions designed to attract top-tier talent:
-
World Fitness Tour Events: Two tour events will serve as qualifiers for the season finale. Each event will be a three-day competition comprising six workouts. Athletes will accumulate points during these events to earn a spot at the World Fitness Finals.
-
World Fitness Finals: The season will culminate in the World Fitness Finals, a 3-4 day competition featuring nine workouts. This event will determine the top athletes of the season.
Athlete Participation:
The WFP plans to sign 20 men and 20 women to professional contracts, granting them automatic entry into the tour events. These athletes, referred to as "Pros," will be joined by "Challenger" athletes who qualify through online qualifiers. Notably, athletes such as Chandler Smith, Alex Gazan, Brooke Wells, Pat Vellner, Alexis Raptis, and Travis Mayer have been confirmed as Pro athletes for the inaugural season. We are happy that 2 of our top athletes, Manon and Emma has signed as well in the WFP, being some of the best athletes in the world, it makes us very happy that they trust in Go Primal product to reach their full potential.
Challenges Faced by the CrossFit Games
The CrossFit Games have encountered several challenges in recent seasons, leading some athletes to explore alternative competitive platforms:
-
Safety Concerns: The tragic incident involving Lazar Đukić, who drowned during the first event at the 2024 CrossFit Games, has raised questions about athlete safety protocols.
-
Structural Changes: Modifications to the competition format and qualification processes have led to uncertainty and dissatisfaction among athletes and fans.
The Shift Towards the World Fitness Project
In light of these challenges, the WFP's emphasis on athlete welfare, transparent operations, and innovative competition formats has attracted athletes seeking a more supportive and predictable competitive environment. The league's structure, which includes guaranteed contracts and a clear path to earning a Pro Card for the 2026 season, offers athletes stability and new opportunities for growth.
